  1. The deed from Thomas Sumter, then governor of SC to Thomas Jefferson, President of US for a tract of land originally surveyed for 250 acres but by resurvey in 1802 determined to be 523 acres was sold to Thos. Jefferson for $250. The deed was registered in Sumter District. The tract at the time was thought to be in Fairfield County, but was actually in Chester County.
In 1844 it was sold back to the State of SC for $2615. Mt. Dearborn was a US military establishent for 42 years. Hopefully in the near future it will become a State Park.

  3. Looking for information on a Music School that existed in Chester, Chester County, SC in the year 1895. I am not sure how long before or after this school existed. Also, any information on a teacher named William R Stewart. He was born in Monroe, Union County, North Carolina, but may have died in Chester.

  4. In 1906, my great-grandfather, Capt. W.H. "Bill" Edwards of Chester published his booklet, "A History of the 17th Regiment, S.C.V., C.S.A." Those booklets were given to many people in Chester County, and I'm sure some families still have them. I would like to buy one and would be willing to pay up to $500 according to the condition. If anyone has one they are willing to sell, please contact me by email at bobhist@yahoo.com, or by snail mail at 412 Sheffield Drive, Darlington, SC 29532. Thank you. Robert J. Stevens

  6. I am looking for any information that might help me prove that a Ninian Craig/Crage [who was on the 1772 voyage aboard Lord Dunluce from Larne, County Antrim, (northern) Ireland, with Rev. Wm. Martin and was granted 250 acres along Turkey Creek, apparently in York County (according to Tom Mayhugh; the branch names then used are no longer on maps I have seen)] was the father of John Craig 1761-1842, who served in the New Acquisition Militia 1776 onwards and moved to the Pickens-Oconee area in the late 1780's. John's first wife was Catherine Clarke, daughter of Wm. Clarke; she died December 1785 (before he moved away from the area), apparently in childbirth (son Wm. Craig); no idea where she may have been buried.
John Craig's grandson was Wm. Ninian Craig, but I have little else to "prove" the connection between the two. John said in his 1839 article "An Account of the Revolutionary War in York and Chester" (republished 16 March 1854 in the Chester Standard) that his father came [to S.C.] with Rev. Martin but did not include his given name.
